The challenge
X-Monitor is a solar plant monitoring platform designed to help operators monitor power generation and identify issues across solar plants. I joined the project as the first designer at Alexandria, where I spent three years helping shape the product from an early MVP into the company's first commercial offering, with the long-term vision of becoming a standalone SaaS platform. Working in a startup environment, my role extended beyond product design. Alongside leading UX and UI, I participated in client discovery sessions, stakeholder management, roadmap planning, pricing discussions, and competitive benchmarking, contributing to both product and business strategy. The product needed to evolve from a simple monitoring tool into a scalable platform capable of supporting solar plants of different sizes and increasing product complexity. To design for this future, I first had to understand how solar plants operate, how operators diagnose and resolve issues, and how plant owners use monitoring data to monitor business performance.
The solution
I led the discovery process through user shadowing, interviews, and workshops with operators, plant managers, and stakeholders. The insights led us to redesign the product around a dashboard experience, which we refined through iterative prototyping and usability testing. To support future growth, I established the product's first design system, creating reusable components, data visualization patterns, and custom iconography tailored to the solar industry.
